What is the difference between granite, quartz, and quartzite?

Granite is a natural stone quarried from the Earth. Granite is a very durable and heat resistant material available in a wide variety of colors and patterns. The color patterns in granite slabs tend to have more movement compared to quartz, and you may find slabs with  a more speckled and uniform pattern, or dramatic and bold veining.

Quartz countertops are extremely durable, resisting staining, chipping, and scratching. Quartz countertops are waterproof and do not require sealing. However, quartz is not as tolerant of heat as granite. Lifetime Granite recommends using a hot pad or trivet underneath pots and casserole dishes to protect quartz countertops. Quartz slabs are  made in both solid colors as well as patterns designed to look like all types of natural stone, like granite, marble, soapstone, and concrete.

Quartzite is a natural stone like granite, but quartzite tends to be harder than granite as well as more porous. Due to its higher porosity, quartzite will require more frequent sealing than granite to avoid staining or moisture absorption. Quartzite tends to be available in lighter colors like creamy whites, beiges, and pale grey tones. The look of a quartzite slab is often similar to marble, but without the higher maintenance needs of a marble slab.

How do I care for my granite countertops?

We recommend using a solution containing 70% denatured alcohol and 30% water for daily cleaning. We also suggest that you have your granite counters resealed approximately every three to five years, especially if you choose a lighter-colored stone. Regular sealing helps protect your natural stone countertops from staining.

Do you have remnants available to purchase?

Yes, Lifetime Granite has a selection of both granite and quartz remnants available for sale. Using remnants is an affordable option for bathroom remodels and miscellaneous home improvement projects, like fireplace hearths. Remnant sizes and color selection varies year-round depending on our current stock. Please call to make an appointment to view and select the best remnant for your project.

Can I pick out my own granite slabs?

Absolutely! If you don’t fall in love with any of the slabs or samples we have displayed in our showroom, we can refer you to one of our wholesale suppliers in either Washington or Oregon. Simply let them know that your countertop fabricator is Lifetime Granite when you place your slabs on hold. We will take care of getting your material transferred directly to our fabrication shop.

How long will it take for my countertops to be installed?

Your installation timeline will depend on the scope of your project and our current fabrication schedule. Our in-house natural stone fabricators give each project their undivided attention.

What is the price range for granite versus quartz?

Both granite and quartz start out at a similar price, but the price range for either material depends on the specific color you choose and the square footage of your project. Other factors that will contribute to your pricing include customized edging, backsplash options, and contour designs.

We do require an appointment in order to give your custom project our undivided attention while working out all the details.

Can you tear out my old countertops?

Yes, we can remove your old countertops and dispose of them prior to installing your new granite or quartz countertops. The cost of this additional service depends on the square footage of your existing counters and whether your old countertops are made of tile, laminate, or stone.

What other products do you offer other than kitchen and bathroom countertops?

We also offer stainless steel kitchen sinks, composite sinks (Blanco and Karran), and vanity sinks. If you have a hard surface in your home that you would like to upgrade, such as your fireplace mantle, shower surround, bar area, or window sills, we can help.

Does Lifetime Granite work with materials other than granite and quartz?

Our primary specialties are granite and quartz countertops. However, we also work with quartzite, marble, and soapstone.
